Origin of "Hakone 17 Toh"
Various hot springs (Onsen) in the Hakone Mountain region are called "Hakone 17 Toh",(17 noted hot springs in Hakone).
"7 hot springs", Yumoto, Tonosawa, Miyanoshita, Dogashima, Sokokura, Kiga, and Ashinoyu, used to be called "Hakone 7 Toh",(traditional 7 noted hot springs in Hakone), until the middle of the Meiji Period. The hot springs except Ashinoyu were situated along a mountain stream of the Haya River in the center of the Hakone region.
Recently 10 other hot springs such as Oohiradai, Kowakidani, Gora, Miyagino, Ninotaira, Sengokuhara, Ubako, Yunohanazawa, Takogawa and Ashinoko were added to these 7 hot springs now called "Hakone 17 Toh".
