About This Area

The name "Miyanoshita" (below the court) is derived from its location, below the court of Kumano Jinja Shrine. The first hot spring was discovered here at the end of the 14th century, and many affluent visitors came to enjoy the therapeutic springs in the 18th century. Fujiya Hotel was established during this period, and remains today. Miyanoshita prospered as a resort for foreigners in the late 19th to early 20th century, and the ryokan of this area continue to lead the way among Hakone hot spring resorts in terms of construction, facilities, quality and quantity of hot spring baths and customer service.
